Sheriff Carl Clifford Williams
Carl C . Williams was born August 8, 1934 in Marta, Texas. He married Alice J. Crockett in June 1955 and he received a Bachelor’s in Science from Sul Ross State University in 1957.
Over the years, Williams taught school, became a Deputy Sheriff in El Paso County, a Texas Highway Patrolman in Van Horn and Alpine, and was elected Sheriff of Brewster County. He is a founding member of the Texas Commission
on Law Enforcement Officers Standards and Education and the Brewster County Rescue Squad; a founder, past president, and life time member of the Big Bend Law Enforcement Officers Association; a founder, lifetime member, and past president of the Texas Narcotic Officers Association; and he assisted with the creation of the Sul Ross Security Department.
Williams is a Retired Colonel of the Texas State Guard, a graduate of the Army Institute for Professional Development Basic Military Police Officer Course, a Life membership in the Sheriff’s Association of Texas, a Life membership in the National Sheriffs Association, and a Life member of the Texas National Guard Association.
In his personal life, along with his wife Alice, Williams owned and operated a photography studio and photo processing plant. He also wrote his first book, a historical record of lawmen of
Brewster County along with memoirs of his life and work titled “More Than A Badge – Rough Country, the Law & Me.” He is the recipient of the Sul Ross University “Distinguished Alumni” award, and is a co-founder of The Old Sheriffs Museum and Research Center in Fort Davis, Texas. He and Alice have two children.
