Sheriff Jim Shelton Skinner

Jim Shelton Skinner was born December 20, 1905 in Seymore, Texas and died in 1997. His wife, Lanell Sansom suggested Skinner come to Brewster County to ranch in November 1940, where he and his partner, Leslie Fenstermaker, ranched in the Glass Mountains.

Appointed Deputy Sheriff in Marathon in 1944, he served until 1964 when he returned to ranching until he was appointed to fill Sheriff Williams unexpired term in May 1970. Sheriff Skinner served again until 1976. He was noted for his constant patrols all over the county, and for being fair and impartial.

After retiring as sheriff the second time, he returned again to ranching and spent his time on a small cattle ranch near Paint Rock, Texas until his death in 1997.
